3 countries in 3 hours??

Thats absurd!
You cant even get out of Ontario in 3 hours.
But I did it... from Switzerland to Germany we took the highway through Austria. I dont remember much though...
I was sleeping!
Traveling is exhausting. Sometimes I feel like I need a vacation from my vacation. This week was especially long... I didnt spend as much time in each city, so that meant a new host every 2 days or so. Which means more evenings out! They enjoy showing you the city at night for some reason... although I must agree, it does look different in the dark.
I spent the last few days of June in Munich, Germany.

The Rathause (city hall)

My host Rami was from Jordan and studying in the local college - that meant I got to stay in the dorms!! I felt like I was back in Kemptville. We cooked dinners in the common kitchen and went to pubs in the residence basement. Rami took me to a CS Canada Day party and I got to meet some other Canadians that were in Munich - either living in the city or passing through like me. I didn't explore the city much because the weather was pretty miserable. I did take a trip out of the centre however. I went to Dachau and visited a concentration camp nearby. I cant exactly explain what it was like... it was very sobering and surreal. It was almost uncomfortable actually...
Heres a link if you'd like to read up on it:

Dachau Concentration Camp

While I was there, Rami also hosted 2 hitch hikers from Italy! They were taking 2 weeks to hike from Milan to Berlin. Really great people - we only had one night with them unfortunately but it was definately a memorable visit!!

Me, Mickele, Cicela and Rami

During my last few hours in Munich, the sun decided to peak out from behind the neverending clouds. After packing my bags, I decided to take one last tour through the centre. I met up with someone from the CS party and soaked up the sun in the park. I took it pretty easy while in Germany and decided to relax more and see less... I don't feel like I missed anything however!

Just some pretty building in the park

After I grabbed my bags and said my goodbyes, I headed to the train station to catch my train. THAT, I almost missed! First time I had to run for the train, and it will NEVER happen again! My bags have slowly gotten heavier over the past few weeks, and its starting to become hard to walk! 500 M and I need to take a sit down...
Anyways, I met a really nice girl from Michegan and we chatted our way to Austria.

I met my dream host in Salzburg - a cook! who loved music! It was PERFECT! He took me to a pub that evening to see some live music. I almost declined the invite due to exhaustion, but figured a little more sleep deprevation wouldnt hurt. It ended up being a great show!! We cruzed around town afterwards and then had one of these:
Austrian street meat! that you get from the gas station... a little shady but so delicious.
The next day Christian took me out on a walking tour of the city - he put it best when he said its a "big town in a small city". Tons of people but not crowded, lots of noise but really quiet. Really beautiful! After hiking up a huge hill (of course!) we hopped in the car and took a driving tour to the next 2 towns over.
Each town surrounded a little lake, which was then surrounded by mountains. It was stunning!
That night we loaded up my iPod with some new music and the next morning I was on the bus to the airport!
... where I had to wait for my carshare ride for 5 hours.
Long and boring wait but it saved me 40 Euros! Trains in Austria and Switzerland are quite expensive so I try to save where I can. The car pooling systems here are amazing! I met a really nice girl on the ride who was from Ecuador. (I think I must have met over 100 new people by now! I was counting, but then ... I lost count) Unfortunately our driver didnt speak English, but thats ok. We made it to Vienna safe and sound!
I met my 2 hosts yesterday - a great couple who are 27 and have been together for 11 years! Last night we had sushi (first maki roll in 3 months!!) and tonight I cooked them a true North American dish!
Beer can chicken!! A huge success.

Tomorrow ill do some exploring and hopefully get to go inside the Spanish Riding school for a lil tour.  Then on Thursday I hop on a bus and head to PRAGUE!!! One of the cities ive been dying to get to!!

  2. Hey Kelly! We went to the Dachau concentration camp when we were there in 2007. It's quite the experience... no words... but a must in everyone's lifetime!
